Lutheran West has hired Andrea Petta ’03 to lead the Women’s Basketball Program. Petta will take over for Trey Senney ’02, who stepped down at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 season. A proud member of the graduating class of 2003, Coach Petta was a four-year varsity athlete on the Longhorn basketball and softball teams. As a basketball player, she suited up for the legendary Karen Wittrock and was an important cog in the historic tradition of the Women’s basketball program. In her four years playing varsity basketball (1999-2003), the team had a record of 71-19, were three-time MAC 8 Conference Champions (2001, 2002, 2003), three-time Sectional Champions (2001, 2002, 2003), and finished District Runner-up twice (2002, 2003).
From an individual standpoint, Petta had a storied high school career. She was a two-time MAC 8 Conference MVP, three-time 1st team All Conference selection, three-time team MVP, and two-time All District award winner. Petta was a great shooter and is still the school record holder for 3 point field goals for a single game, season, and career. She also sits on the OHSAA Girls state record list for 3 point field goals made. Her athletic talents and accomplishments earned her Longhorn Athlete of the Year twice during her high school career.
She went on to play at the collegiate level for Baldwin-Wallace, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2007. Coach Petta also holds a Master of Science in Environmental Science and Management, which she earned from Duquesne University in 2009. She has served as Assistant Varsity Softball Coach at Lutheran West (2004), Girls’ Basketball Coach at Lakewood Lutheran School (2005-2007), Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Lutheran West (2013-2014), and Head Varsity Women’s Basketball Coach at Fairview High School (2015-2020). At Fairview she was the 2018-2019 PAC Coach of the Year and was selected to coach the GCBCA All Star game in 2019. Coach Petta is currently a full time faculty member at Lutheran West.
Petta on her new position:
“As a graduate of Lutheran West and 4-year varsity basketball player under legendary coach Karen Wittrock, it has always been a dream of mine to one day step in as the head coach of my alma mater. The past five years coaching at Fairview have been some of the most fulfilling years of my life, but I am looking forward to coming home to continue the winning tradition of the Women’s Basketball program at Lutheran West. I am excited about the opportunity to walk alongside the young women at Lutheran West as they grow as basketball players and strong, Christian leaders. I am equally excited about the opportunity to develop a group of competitors, to hang new banners in the gymnasium, and to take the program to new heights.”
Miller (Athletic Director) says:
“We’ve been blessed to have Andrea back with us at Lutheran West as a faculty member, and couldn’t be more excited to welcome her back in a coaching capacity as she takes the helm of our Women’s Basketball Program. Coach Petta was instrumental in the success of the program during her years playing for Coach Karen Wittrock. Her competitiveness as a student-athlete has surely transitioned with her to the coaching ranks. We’re certain that Coach Petta’s core beliefs, character, and competitiveness will provide quality leadership as we venture in to the next chapter of Lutheran West Women’s Basketball.”
