The Drama Program at Lutheran West

The drama program at Lutheran West allows students to explore their interests and improve their skills in all areas of theatre. Not only are our students actors on stage, but they also work hard behind the scenes creating sets and props, making hand-made costumes, designing light and sound plots, creating hair and makeup styles, and ushering during performances. Students involved in our drama program can also participate in the unique Dazzle Awards program through Playhouse Square, and can join Lutheran West’s active chapter of the International Thespian Society.

Exploration, Creativity, & Expression

Our two major high school productions during each school year are a full-length play in the fall and a musical production in the spring. Students work together to stage the productions, as on-stage talent, crew members, pit band, audio/visual technicians, costume designers, set designers, and more.

In recent years, productions have included:

Clue: On Stage (High School Edition)
The Music Man
Little Shop of Horrors
Curtains: School Edition
The Play That Goes Wrong (High School Edition)
Hello, Dolly!

The middle school drama program also performs a play (or one-act plays) each spring.

The Dazzle Awards Program

Since 2018, Lutheran West has proudly participated in the Playhouse Square Dazzle Awards, earning multiple nominations over the years and several wins. This program offers arts education opportunities throughout the school year and culminates with the Dazzle Awards ceremony each May. Awards are presented to outstanding musical theater productions and students in 13 categories including Best Musical, Best Actor/Actress, Best Costume Design and Best Scenic Design.

Lutheran West Drama has earned many nominations and three wins:

2024 – Best Technical Execution – Curtains: School Edition
2024 – Best Musical (Tier 1) – Curtains: School Edition
2025 – Best Costume Design – Hello, Dolly!
