Summer Reading & Assignments

One of the fundamental goals of the English Department at Lutheran West is to establish a reading habit in the busy lives of our high school students. We want to develop reading fluency and stamina, which result in increased reading rates. This will help students to develop confidence, build vocabulary, and improve writing. It is our hope that we can work together with parents to ignite and sustain the pleasure and passion of young readers as well as to build stamina for ready to prepare for college and careers.

Where to Find Summer Reading Books:
Most students prefer to purchase their own copies of the book(s). We recommend:
- Half Price Books near Great Northern Mall (4687 Great Northern Blvd., North Olmsted)
- Amazon (see links in list below)

If you prefer free options for acquiring the book(s):
- Try you local public library
- Use your SORA account (must have Lutheran West email address)
- Borrow from a friend who owns the book
- As a last resort, email your teacher for help acquiring your book(s)

Summer Reading Expectations:
All students must read the summer reading for their appropriate class(es) and complete all assignments before the first day of school in August. Teachers will be going over the summer reading and assignments the first week of school. Please read the selections and complete any associated assignments for the class that you will be in for the 2023 - 2024 school year.

Late Enrollment Expectations:
If a student enrolls into Lutheran West after August 1st, the student will have the first three weeks of the first quarter to read and complete the assignments for the summer reading in that English class. If a student does not complete this requirement, they will receive a zero on the assignment in that English class. If a student enrolls into Lutheran West after the 2023-2024 school year starts, he/she must acquire the novel and then will have three weeks to read the novel and complete the work for the summer assignment in that English class. If not completed within three weeks, he/she will receive a zero for the assignment in that English class.
