As far as high school sports go, upsets are fairly uncommon. A fan who follows the teams can project who will win most games with fairly high success rate; most games in high school sports are predictable.
That even goes for high school baseball. Certainly baseball is a much less predictable sport than most others, but generally, if you know the pitchers, it is not extraordinarily difficult to guess the outcome.
Last night, however, all expectations were thrown out the window. Barely two weeks ago, Lutheran West was embarrassed on their home field by the Clippers, falling 20-5. It easily could have been more, but Clearivew, ever the gracious visiting club, substituted freely and backed off of the offensive attack.
Last night, though, LW not only hung with the Clippers, they beat them 3-2. In the first meeting, sophomore Eric Szczepinski, pitching in relief of junior starter Tyler Cerny, was lit up for six runs—all earned—in two long innings in the first meeting.    Last night he threw seven innings, allowing only two runs—one earned—and only four hits. Szczepinski had Clearview out in front of his pitches, trying to hit mammoth shots into a wind blowing straight in.  Sure they hit some long fly balls, but with the wind blowing in, those were tracked down by LW’s sure-handed outfielders.
Offensively, LW got exactly what it needed when it needed it. Down 2-0 in the top of the sixth, LW took advantage of a critical error on a ground ball to second to score three runs. After junior Kyle DiCapua led off the sixth with a ground out, senior Jake Dersi also grounded out to second. This second ground ball was booted by the Clipper fielder and Dersi reached safely. That was followed by a single off the bat of senior Ricky Downer, an RBI single from sophomore Colin McCartney, a fielders’ choice from junior CJ Griffin, and a two-run, two out double from junior Eric Lewis to put LW up 3-2 for good.
