Host Lutheran West fell to Stars favorite Firelands last night at the Rock Gymnasium despite a ferocious comeback. After falling behind 22-8 in the first quarter and trailing 30-16 at halftime, Lutheran West closed the gap to as little as two but couldn’t quite pull the upset Wednesday. The final score was 57-44.
“[Firelands] came out and jumped us,” said Longhorn Coach Josh Campbell. “We’re not used to dealing with that kind of pressure.”
It appeared that the girls quickly learned how, however, as a 23-11 run over the course of the first ten minutes of the second half put LW to within two at 41-39. The run was capped by back-to-back three-pointers from senior guard Bre Coreno
The experienced Falcons did not, however, wilt when faced with the Longhorn challenge. “We faltered a bit in the third quarter,” said Firelands Coach Dave Kudela. “But in the fourth we rebounded well and started to play perimeter defense. We got back to taking our time and having good possessions.”
Lutheran West was led by senior Ari Tomasula with 13 points. LW outrebounded the Falcons 38 to 26 but turned the ball over eight more times than Firelands, 31-23. Firelands was 11-22 from the free throw line, while the Longhorns took half as many shots from the charity stripe and made only six.
