FIRELANDS --  The Lutheran West men’s varsity basketball team started strong in both halves on Friday, December 13, beating Firelands 60-47.

Within the first 30 seconds of the game, Lutheran West had a 7-0 lead after a pair of buckets, including a three-pointer, by senior Greg Kunze and a steal off of an inbound by junior Andrew O’Hara who then put the ball in the basket.

The Longhorns continued their push in the game and came out of the first quarter with a 22-11 lead. The Falcons started to cool LW down, going on a 10-2 run of their own.  They held the Longhorns to only 10 points in the second quarter, but West still went into the locker room with a 32-24 lead at half time.

To start the second half, Lutheran West went on a 10-2 run that essentially put the game away with O’Hara scoring eight points in the run. Firelands didn’t give up and fought their way back, coming within nine points of the Longhorns and with a chance to cut the lead to seven after West missed an opportunity to score with three minutes left.

However, LW stepped up on defense and held the Falcons in the closing minutes of the game.

O’Hara has stepped into a big role in the past couple of games, with senior Max Quinn still out with an ankle injury. He has become a force in center that other teams have had trouble containing, including Friday night’s game in which he scored 24 points.

Coach Alan Januzzi was proud of his team’s showing on Friday night. “We talked about how Firelands is a difficult place to play, and I told them to expect to face one of the most well-coached basketball teams we’ll face because Brett does such a nice job. Firelands plays hard, they’re good basketball players and I tried to prepare them for that. I was pleased with how they responded to the challenge.”

In addition to O’Hara’s 24 points, Kunze finished the night with 15 points. Also in double digits was senior Chris Scott with 11.

Lutheran West is now 4-0 overall and 3-0 overall in conference, with one of their best starts to the season in recent years. They look to continue their strong start with their next game against conference rival Fairview.
