ROCKY RIVER --  The Lutheran West Longhorns remained perfect in what was really the team’s first close game of the season.

With both teams tied at 64 with 3.5 seconds left in overtime, senior Chris Scott scored his only two-points of the night with an offensive rebound and put-back that gave West the 66-64 victory over the visiting Clippers.

Scott’s basket at the end of overtime culminated a dramatic second-half comeback by the Longhorns.

It looked impossible that the game would ever come that close as the Clippers came out and started the game by making 12 of its first 16 field goals to take a 28-14 lead after one quarter of play.

At that point, Coach Alan Januzzi switched the Longhorns to a man-to-man defense and was able to turn the game around. LW was able to make up some ground in the second quarter and bring the game to within eight at the half.

Lutheran West came out in the second half looking like a new team and continued to chip away at the Clippers’ lead until junior Andrew O’Hara put LW into the lead at 45-43 with 17 seconds left in the third.

The Longhorns extended their lead to four early in the start of the fourth only to see Clearview hit back-to-back three-pointers and take the lead back at 49-47.

Both teams continued to push with West controlling the lead with under a minute. However, the Clippers were able to tie the game at 56 with a three point play off of a foul.

Ultimately, after some wild plays and lead switching, the Longhorns found themselves coming out on top with Scott’s basket.

This game was a big victory for LW. In their first true challenge of the season, they were able to prevail and persevere. They made changes when necessary, including switching up their defense in the second, and stepped up to the challenge. The team really started to click in the second half which contributed to their big comeback and win.

The team was led by Andrew O’Hara with 18 points. In his first game back from an ankle injury, senior Max Quinn added 17 and fellow senior Greg Kunze contributed 15 points.

The Longhorns are now 7-0 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
