ROCKY RIVER --  There was much doubt Friday morning if the Lutheran West Longhorns would be able to take on conference rival Fairview due to bad weather and the school closing. However, when the game was called on, there was no doubt in the Longhorns’ mind to bring a solid performance to blowout Fairview 58-32.

The Longhorn’s established their dominance early, keeping Fairview scoreless for the first five minutes of the game while the Longhorns went on a 11-0 scoring run. Fairview did catch a few breaks cutting the lead to 13-9 at the end of the first quarter, and held the Longhorns to only six points in the second quarter with a score of 19-15 at halftime.

In the second half, the Longhorns brought back their intensity that they had in the beginning of the game, going on an 8-4 scoring run in the first two and a half minutes of the third quarter. Junior Chris Scott gave the Longhorns big momentum going into the fourth quarter after he scored a three from deep beyond the arc as time expired, giving the Longhorns their biggest lead of 12 with a score of 40-28.

In the fourth quarter, the Longhorns eliminated any doubt, outscoring the Warriors 18-4 in the final period. Senior Kyle Masek’s three with 2:50 left in the game helped seal the game for the Longhorns, putting them up 49-32. The Longhorns finished the game 58-32 as the packed student section rushed the court in celebration.

Senior Dan Hillenbrand led all scorers in the game with 17 points.  Senior Chris Ranc had 13. The Longhorns (23 of 55 for 42%) put up twenty more shots than Fairview (14 of 35 for 40%).  LW also won the turnover battle by ten (LW-20, Fairview-30).
LW’s sweltering defense held conference points per game leader John Miles (19.1 ppg) to only six points.  Fairview shot only five free throws in the entire game.
