CLEARVIEW --  The Lutheran West Men’s Basketball Team accomplished a big feat when they beat their conference rivals from Clearview on the Clippers’ own floor. After working hard for four straight quarters, the Longhorns were able to come out with the 68-60 victory.
After not playing for two weeks, West came out strong and took a 9-0 lead within the first 1 minute and 48 seconds. They then continued to play strong and shoot well from all over the court. In the second quarter, however, the Clippers were able to step-up their own play by scoring 26 points and taking a three point lead after two quarters of play.
Coming out of halftime, the Longhorns knew they would have to play even tougher if they wanted to win. That’s when seniors Chris Ranc and Dan Hillenbrand decided to take an even bigger role and lead the team. Hillenbrand became a big presence in the key and was able to score 19 of his 25 points in the second half, including 13 in the third quarter on 5 of 6 shooting. Ranc also erupted in the second half, scoring 7 of his 14 total points and grabbing 7 of his 9 rebounds.
After the third quarter, the Longhorns had a small 47-45 lead. Almost immediately into the next quarter, the team extended their lead by 6 points. The Clippers were able to pull within two, but LW put the pressure on to extend their lead to 57-49. The Clippers didn’t go down easily, as they battled back and had a 7-2 run of their own cutting down the lead to 59-56 with 2:23 left in the game. LW stepped up on their defense and kept the Clippers from overtaking their lead. The team was clutch late in the fourth quarter and was able to seal the win by sinking five free throws, finishing the quarter with 21 team points.
In the competitive win, the Longhorns played consistent and strong. Despite 22 turnovers, the team played aggressively, shot well, and was able to control the game to get the important PAC-12 win and put them at 3-2 in conference play.
