After starting the year off with one of the best teams in the country in the Keystone Wildcats, and losing miserably, the Lady Longhorn's softball team traveled to Firelands in hope of getting their first win of the year.  The Longhorns started off slow with one only one base hit in the first four innings. Defensively, they played well with sophomore pitcher Emily Mystic striking out 12 batters and great catches by sophomore left fielder Kaitlyn Thornton. Despite the Longhorn's defense effort, Firelands managed to score once in the third inning and twice in the fifth.
Down 3-0 in the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Longhorns had to rally. Freshman Ava Gripp started the inning off with a walk and Thornton followed with a single. Sophomore Maddie Jakabcic made it to first base on a drop third strike. After an error made by Firelands, Gripp and Thornton came home closing the gap to 3-2. With two outs, senior Kristen Sedlak came to bat and came up big with an RBI single that brought the tying run home.
The game then came to a dead lock with neither team scoring until the bottom of the 12th. Firelands' first batter was walked and with two outs, Firelands hit a line drive to center field that brought home the winning run. Although they lost, the Lady Longhorns gave their all and were able to walk off the field with their heads up. Their next game is Wednesday at home where the Longhorns hope to get their first win.
