The Lutheran West Softball team lost to a very tough Black River team on a day with harsh weather conditions. The Pirates came to West ready to play and were able to run rule the Longhorns 15-1 in a long five innings.
Still without sophomore Emily Mystic due to a concussion, the Longhorns used freshman Aly Silberhorn on the mound. Silberhorn pitched a tough game, but Black River swung away and collected 16 hits off of the young pitcher, with only two going for extra bases. Defensively, LW had a difficult time fielding the ball cleanly and picked up eight errors in the loss.
On the offensive side of the ball, things were not going smoothly for the Longhorns either. They struggled with their bats and only picked up four hits in the entire game. They were able to avoid a shut- out when junior Em Wilkens hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth with other hits coming off the bats of senior Kristen Sedlak (2) and sophomore Carey Smith (1).
The loss gives Lutheran West records of 2-9 overall and 1-8 in the conference. The Longhorns look to rebound in Pac-12 action on Monday with a game versus powerhouse Wellington.
