FAIRVIEW --  Senior John Smolik (W, 3-3) was dominant and Lutheran West rolled last night at Bohlken Park as they took down rival Fairview 4-1.  Fairview, who had just mercy ruled Stripes Division leading Columbia 10-0 the day before, looked overwhelmed the entire night by Smolik’s fastball.  The Warriors struck out 15 times and put only ten balls in play.

The Longhorns hit the ball hard all day, but the total offensive numbers—four runs on ten hits—belies the truth.  With the wind blowing a steady—and frosty cold—20 mph straight in from center field, West could easily have had ten runs on 15 hits on a normal day. West did what they needed to do, scoring four times in the third and making it stand up.

Junior Mike Montie started the rally off with a screaming line drive over the shortstop for a one out single.  Junior Tyler Robinson singled up the middle and moved to second when the centerfielder threw wildly to third trying to nab Montie going first to third. After Montie scampered home on a wild pitch to give LW their first run of the inning, Robinson scored the second on a rope to center by senior Jake Albrecht.  The Longhorns then got a pair of walks to load the bases, and junior Hunter Albers scored the big blow with a smash to left center that scored both Albers and sophomore Trey DeCicco.

Fairview only threatened twice.  In the first inning, Fairview managed to get runners on second and third with two outs before Smolik could get out of the inning with his third strikeout of the inning.  The other inning that they made Smolik sweat was in the sixth.  Fairview’s first hitter of the inning hit a routine fly ball to left that was dropped by Albers.  After a steal of second, the next batter beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners.  The next batter hit a ground ball to short.  Robinson’s throw may have pulled junior Ryan Szczepinski off of the bag at first, but the umpires ruled in LW’s favor and called the runner out.  One run scored on the play, but a strikeout and a fly out center ended the inning.

Freshman Eddie Ramos (2 for 3, two doubles), Robinson (2 for 4), Albrecht (2 for 4), and Szczepinski (2 for 3) all had multiple hits for the Longhorns.
