ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West took care of business last night, knocking off the visiting Brooklyn Hurricanes 10-1 one day after beating them 20-1 on the road. Sophomore Zach Hammer-Huber (W, 1-0) was dynamic on the mound, shutting out the Hurricanes over four innings, striking out eight and walking only two. It was Hammer-Huber’s first win in his varsity career.

Offensively, it didn’t take West long to get it going.  After scoring a run on a walk, a pair of wild pitches, and a sacrifice fly from senior Jake Albrecht in the first, West put up a four spot in the second.  Senior John Smolik walked to lead off the frame, advanced to second on a ground ball off the bat of junior Hunter Albers that was misplayed by the Hurricane defense, went to third on a passed ball, and then scored on sophomore Jake Gross’s ground out. Albers scored the second run of the inning on an RBI groundout from freshman Edward Ramos.  Later in the inning, Albrecht hit a two-run two-out double over the centerfielder’s head to score junior Jeremiah Stover and junior Tyler Robinson, putting LW up 5-0.

West would add two runs in the third—the big hit here was an RBI double from Ramos, two more in the fourth on RBI singles from junior Ryan Szczepinski and sophomore Trey DeCicco, and another run in the sixth on another RBI single from Szczepinski.
For the day, LW’s 2-5 hitters were a combined 7 for 14 with 7 RBIs.

The only inning that Hammer-Huber had any stress at all was in the first inning.  After a weak groundout to Ramos at third to start the game, Hammer-Huber gave up a walk and two consecutive singles to load the bases with no one out. Hammer-Huber, showing maturity beyond his years, calmly struckout the next two batters to squelch the threat.

Freshman Owen Youngers pitched the last three innings of game allowing one run on two hits, striking out five. Youngers set down the final eight batters of the game.
