ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West 11, Oberlin 1

Behind great pitching from junior Mike Montie (W, 1-2) and patient hitting from the offense, Lutheran West took care of business against Oberlin’s ace to sweep the season series from the visiting Phoenix on Wednesday.  Montie was practically unhittable, allowing only two hits in the mercy-rule shortened contest.  Montie struck out five and walked three and only allowed one run—albeit unearned—in his five innings of work.

Offensively, West made Oberlin ace and Oberlin College recruit Jackson Schaum work for every out he got all day.  In the second inning, junior Ryan Szczepinski, junior Hunter Albers, senior John Smolik, and junior Jeremiah Stover all worked walks to start the frame to tie the game at one.  When freshman Owen Youngers got hit by pitch to bring in Albers, West was up 2-1. Montie drilled a sac fly to center to score Smolik and LW was up 3-1.

In the third, West continued to put the pressure on.  Szczepinski drilled a one-out screaming line drive to right center, and Albers drew a walk.  Smolik drove in Szczepinski to make the game 4-1 and moved Albers to third on a sharp single to center.  After a strikeout for out number two, Albers stole home after the second pitch of freshman DJ Robinson’s at bat.  Albers, who extended his lead off of third as the catcher caught the pitch, broke for home as the catcher carelessly tossed the ball back to the pitcher.  Albers then beat the throw back to home from the pitcher for the Longhorns fifth run of the game.

Lutheran West then broke the game open in the fourth with a RBI singles from sophomore Trey DeCicco and Szczepinski, and an RBI groundout from Albers to extend the lead to 8-1.

Meanwhile, Montie was dealing, allowing no hits after the first inning.  Twice Oberlin managed to get a runner to third with two outs, but was unable to get him home.

West finished the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.  With two outs, Montie singled on a screaming line drive off the chest of the second baseman.  Junior Tyler Robinson then singled up the middle and advanced to second when the center fielder threw to third to try to throw out Montie.  Both Robinson and Montie would score on senior Jake Albrecht’s two-run single through the right side. After Albrecht moved to second on a balk, DeCicco singled him in to push the Longhorns lead to ten runs and end the game.
