ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West 5, Independence 3

In one of the best opening games in recent memory, Lutheran West took down a strong Independence behind great pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting.  Junior Ryan Szczepinski (W, 1-0) got the win for the Longhorns despite freezing temperatures and a seemingly arctic wind blowing straight in from center.  Szczepinski was not affected by the temperatures, holding the visiting Blue Devils to two runs (one earned) in five innings of work, striking out two and walking only two. Senior John Smolik picked up his first save of the year by striking out all three batters he faced in the seventh.

Offensively, junior Tyler Robinson came through whenever LW needed him.  Robinson broke through in the third, when he singled in sophomore Trey DeCicco with the Longhorns first run of game.  Robinson then scored later in the inning on a single from senior Jake Albrecht. In the fourth, Robinson put the Longhorns ahead for good with a two-out, two-run single to plate DeCicco and freshman Edward Ramos, putting LW up 4-2.

Lutheran West tacked on an additional run in the fifth when junior Jeremiah Stover’s double down the left field line scored junior Hunter Albers from first.

West looks to stay on the winning track when they host Parma tomorrow at 4:30.
