ROCKY RIVER --  On a wet and dreary day on Linden Road, Lutheran West fell to the visiting Redmen of Parma 15-4 in their first game of the year.  West led 3-0 after the first inning and was tied 4-4 after three innings, only to see the wheels fall of the wagon the rest of the way.

Senior Rory Zakareckis (0-1) was responsible for the first five runs and took the loss for the Longhorns, but it was not because of hitting by the Redmen that the Longhorn senior’s day ended so quickly. Zakareckis fell victim to his own lack of control—he walked three in the second and two more in the third—which led to a rising pitch count.  After getting five of the first six hitters out to start the game, everything suddenly fell apart.  Zakareckis surrendered a walk, a single, two more walks—both on full counts—and then a bases clearing double—all with two outs.

The third inning was more of the same.  Zakareckis walked the first two batters and then struck out the next three batters—all on full counts.  Not surprisingly, he racked up quite a pitch count (104 pitches) and had to be lifted two batters into the fourth.

Things snowballed after Zakareckis was relived.  Junior Ryan Szczepinski was charged with four runs and Zakareckis with two—but the Longhorn pitchers didn’t deserve the outcome. Six batters in the inning reached base on either infield hits (2), misplayed ground balls that were officially ruled fielder’s choices (2), or errors (2).  In total, Szczepinski and Zakareckis gave up one solid hit in the inning.

After a quick fifth, Szczepinski ran out of gas in the sixth and gave up five runs—only one earned—on one hit, five walks, and one key error on a bases loaded ground ball to third.  But Szczepinski got through the inning without forcing Coach Trey Lamb to use up anyone else in his limited pitching staff, which could be key as Lamb looks to set up his rotation for PAC-12 league games beginning on Thursday.

Offensively, things were not a whole lot better. West jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a two-out single from senior Owen Albers, a double from Zakareckis, and a walk to junior John Smolik and a two-run error on a ground ball off the bat of senior Michael Berghaus.  From that point on, West never had more than one hit in an inning.  They did, however, have base-runners: the Longhorns left the bases loaded in the third and fourth inning.  In the game, the Longhorns managed only one hit in eleven at bats with runners in scoring position.

Lutheran West looks to turn things around tomorrow when they play Rocky River at home at 4:30pm.
