ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West fell in the District Semi-Final game last night to state ranked #4 Elyria Catholic 3-2 in a game that came down to the very last pitch.  Junior John Smolik (L, 3-1) matched Panther ace Jack Laird (W, 7-0) pitch for pitch and coming up just short. Smolik struck out five and walked only three in the complete game effort, allowing all three runs in the first three innings.

West had a chance to tie the game up in the top of the seventh.  Junior Jake Albrecht singled to open the frame. Sophomore Hunter Albers sacrificed sophomore Tyler Robinson—who was pinch running for Albrecht--to second with a bunt. With the count 0-2, Smolik then fouled off four pitches and took two more balls before lining out to centerfield for the second out.  Freshman Trey DeCicco struck out on a nasty curveball to end the game.

But LW has nothing to feel bad about.  West battled the highly touted Panthers all the way to the end.  And they scored twice off of the Panther ace who had not previously allowed a single earned run over the course of the season.  After a leadoff walk to Smolik to start the third, DeCicco pulled a fastball right down the third baseline for a double.  Senior Jeremy Geye followed with his second hit of the game on a letter high change-up.

Then things got crazy.  Geye stole second to put runners on second and third.  Laird then uncorked a wild pitch.  DeCicco scored from third.  Geye moved to third.  But when the throw to plate to try and get DeCicco was poor and got away from Laird, Geye tried to score.  Unfortunately for Lutheran West, the ball rolled right to EC’s shortstop who bare handed the ball and threw a strike back to Laird at the plate in time to tag out the diving Geye.

From that moment on, Laird was in charge, allowing only three walks and no hits until Albrecht’s leadoff single in the seventh.

Lutheran West finishes the year with an overall record of 13-9 and 10-6 in conference play.
