OBERLIN --  Good teams find ways to win.  Last night, Lutheran West was pushed to the breaking point by a surprisingly good and extremely feisty Oberlin club. But the Longhorns found a way to win, battling back from an early 4-1 hole and holding off a late Phoenix rally in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

With LW leading 9-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Longhorn senior starting pitcher Rory Zakareckis (W, 2-1) was lifted from the game after a leadoff single and a hit by pitch.  Sophomore relief pitcher Ryan Szczepinski struggled from the start, allowing a walk and two singles to bring the game to 9-7.  Fortunately for LW, what could have been Oberlin’s third run of the inning was thrown out at the plate 7-5-2 when sophomore Hunter Alber’s throw from left was relayed to senior Owen Albers who gunned the runner out at the plate with a strike to senior catcher Jeremy Geye.  The runner who ran through his third base coach’s stop sign at third failed to slide and was masterfully tagged out by Geye when he failed to slide.

With the tying run on first base and only one out, head coach Trey Lamb had no choice but to go to his ace, junior John Smolik.  Smolik, overpowered the two hitters he faced, striking both of them out to preserve the lead and end the game.

Oberlin’s ace, Jackson Schaum was dealing early, striking out 12 Longhorns in his five innings of work.  But he was unable to get Geye or senior Michael Berghaus out all day—and that cost him five runs in their six at bats. Geye started the game by reaching on an error, stole second, and scored on a double by Berghaus.  In the third, Geye singled, stole second and then scored a single by Berghaus.  In the fifth, Geye smashed an RBI double to score freshman Trey DeCicco and then scored on a triple by Berghaus.  Berghaus would score one batter later when senior Owen Albers would knock him in to tie the game at 5.

West got to the Phoenix’s bullpen immediately when they scored twice in the sixth (RBI triple from DeCicco, RBI single from Geye) and twice in the seventh (triple from Albers, RBI single from junior Jake Albrecht, RBI double from sophomore pinch-hitter Hunter Albers) to push the lead to 9-5.
