BROOKLYN --  Lutheran West picked up its first win of the year, knocking off host Brooklyn 10-6 to start off conference play.  West exploded for seven runs in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead. Junior John Smolik (W, 1-0) earned the win in his first start of the season, throwing four innings and allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out four.

Offensively, West took advantage of everything that Brooklyn gave them.  In the third, the Longhorns took advantage of four walks, two errors, and six wild pitches to score their seven runs.  West mixed in singles from senior Jeremy Geye and Rory Zakareckis and sophomore Tyler Robinson, and a double from junior Jake Albrecht.

The Longhorns plated two more runs in the fourth with two two-out RBI singles from senior Alex Gavlak and Albrecht. Albrecht came through again in the sixth inning with another two out RBI single--his third of the day.

The Hurricanes put up four runs off of freshman Zach Hammer-Huber in the fifth—none of them were earned. During the inning, Hammer-Huber gave up zero hits but walked four and was victimized by three Longhorn errors.

West will look to build on the victory when they play host to Firelands at home tomorrow.
