ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West’s tremendous 2017 baseball campaign ended on Friday with a loss in the Regional Semi-Final game to #2 ranked Warren Champion Flashes 9-3.  The Longhorns finished the year with a 20-4 record, the schools second PAC Stripes Championship title in as many years, and a district championship for the first time since 1996.  They won 20+ games for the first time since 2010 and back to back conference titles for the first time since 2008.

Walks killed Lutheran West on Friday. Senior Alex Robinson (L, 6-1) walked seven.  He hit two more Flashes.   Of those nine free passes, four scored.  Robinson kept it from getting out of hand by continually wiggling out of trouble, but it was too much to overcome.

The Flashes jumped on Robinson early, scoring a run in the first and four in the second.  One play in particular in that fateful second inning proved to be the turning point of the entire game. With no one out and runners on first and third, Robinson—as he has done all year—tried to pick off the runner on first.  But he picked him off so badly that the runner didn’t even try to come back to first and just took off for second.  As sophomore first baseman John Smolik threw to second, the runner on third took off for home and beat the relay throw from senior Scottie Berghaus.  What should have been the first out of the inning, turned into a run.  The Flashes scored three more times in the inning—two of which scored with two outs.  So what should have been a one run inning became four and the Longhorns were suddenly down 5-0 instead of 2-0.

Robinson allowed only one more run after that inning until he began to tire in the sixth.

Offensively, West struggled to put runs on the board against the Warren Champion’s junior ace Drake Batcho.  Batcho only surrendered one hit to the Longhorns--although he walked six in those five innings.  He tired in the sixth and Robinson made him pay with a double down the left field line to start the frame.  After junior Rory Zakareckis was hit by the pitch, and Berghaus walked to load the bases, Batcho was pulled from the game.  Robinson came home on a ground ball from senior Tristan Zimmer, but that was all that LW could muster.

In the seventh, with LW down 9-1, the Longhorns plated two more.  With one out, senior Josh Cales singled to start the rally.  Then junior Owen Albers singled to put runners on first and second.  Robinson then crushed a ball to the 360 sign in right center and coasted into third with a two-run triple to end the Longhorns scoring for the game.
