WICKLIFFE --  The baseball season came to a close last night with a 3-0 defeat at the hand of state ranked #7 Wickliffe High School.  West got another solid pitching performance from their starting pitcher, senior Tommy Walker, but was unable to get anything going offensively.  Walker gave up three runs in the bottom of the first and then was unhittable the rest of the game, allowing three hits in the first and then one hit the rest of the game.  But the Longhorns fell short at the plate, failing to score any runs in the game.

Wickliffe’s starting pitcher, Dominic Zingale, was in command from the beginning, striking out a total of 11 Longhorn hitters.  In two innings, Lutheran West had runners on first and second with less than two outs but failed to advance the runner to third.  In both innings, Zingale struck out the next two batters to squelch the rally.

West’s best chance to rally came in the sixth inning when junior Josh Cales led off the inning with a single up the middle.  Sophomore Owen Albers followed with a bad hop single over the head of the Blue Devil shortstop.  After a strikeout, sophomore Matt Brosky hit a 0-2 pitch for a long fly ball down the left field line that hooked foul at the last second.  Fans estimate that the ball would not have had enough distance to make it over the fence had it stayed fair, but it likely would have bounce off the wall and scored Cales and Albers.  Alas, the ball was foul and two pitches later Brosky would be called out on strikes on a changeup level with his eyes.  Baseball is a cruel game.

The first inning started horribly for the Walker on the mound.  Walker struggled in the first to throw strikes—every pitch seemed to be too high.  And when he brought the pitches down, he didn’t get them down enough, making them quite hittable.  A leadoff walk, a misplayed bunt that became a single, and a one-out double in the gap put Wickliffe up 2-0.  The next batter hit a single to put runners on first and third with one out.  Walker then picked the runner off of first, but in the rundown, the runner on third scored to put the score at 3-0.

Lutheran West finishes the year at 16-5.
