ROCKY RIVER --  Sophomore Owen Albers (W, 3-0) threw a complete game shutout and Lutheran West grabbed a key conference win as Albers cooled the red-hot Black River Pirates on Wednesday for West’s third win in as many days of the week.  West advances to 11-2 in conference play, and--taking into account Clearview’s loss to Firelands today--grabs a two game lead and a stranglehold on the PAC-12 Stripes division race.  West has only three games in conference play left—two against 1-10 Oberlin, and then one against Wellington.

Black River came into the game with a two game winning streak, having just swept Stars Division leading Firelands on Monday and Tuesday of the week.  Albers wasn’t impressed however, and shut down the Pirate bats from beginning to end.  The Pirates mustered only three runners to second—none reached third in the entire game.  Only once did Albers have to pitch to more than four batters in an inning.  Albers never threw more than 17 pitches in any inning, completing the five hit shutout in only 82 pitches.

Offensively, West did just enough to comfortably lead throughout, scoring three runs in the third to grab the lead and then adding a run in the fourth to put the game away.  Despite the wind blowing steadily in from left all game, senior Tommy Walker drove a leadoff double to the gap in right center all the way to the fence on Linden Road.  It was Walker’s league leading seventh extra-base hit on the season.  After sophomore Matt Brosky walked and sophomore Rory Zakareckis sacrificed Walker and Brosky to second and third respectively, junior Scottie Berghaus continued to hit with runners in scoring position by driving in Walker with a single to left.  Junior Alex Robinson knocked in Brosky with a hard ground ball past the first baseman, and senior Tim Gettinger continued the RBI parade with a groundout to shortstop.

In the fourth inning, junior Josh Cales collected his second hit of the game to lead off the inning.  Cales now has eight multi-hit games in conference play on the season.  Cales ranks first among all PAC-12 players—two ahead of Albers who ranks second in PAC play with six.  After a pair of groundouts, Cales scored on Brosky’s two-out line drive single to left-center to bring the Longhorns up 4-0.
