FIRELANDS --  Lutheran West lost for the first time in a week and a half, falling on the road for the first time this year.  Junior Alex Robinson (L, 2-2) took the loss, struggling with his control all game.  Robinson walked five and struck out seven, but uncorked three costly wild pitches in his four and one-third innings of work.  Robinson threw 103 total pitches and only 54 of them for strikes.

The game, played in the cold and rain, likely felt worse than it was.  The Longhorns were within striking distance throughout the game; it just didn’t feel like it.  It was the way that LW gave Firelands runs—uncharacteristic errors, mental mistakes, wildness—that made it feel like the loss was much worse than reality.

After Firelands scored an unearned run on a two out error by junior shortstop Scottie Berghaus—just his first error on the year—Robinson struck out next batter to end the inning and limit the damage to just one run.  West responded with two runs of their own when sophomore Matt Brosky led off the inning with the first of his two hits on the day, moved to second on a single by sophomore Rory Zakareckis, moved to third on a ground out by Berghaus, and scored on a wild pitch.  Zakareckis scored on a passed ball later in the inning.

West’s lead, however, would be short lived as Firelands quickly scored a run to tie it up, on a single, a wild pitch, a passed ball, and a single.
It was the bottom of the third, however, that did LW in. The inning felt like it lasted an hour.  Robinson started the inning by walking the bases loaded, throwing twelve of his first 13 pitches in the inning for balls.  Not to give in, Robinson came right back and struck out Colin Ransom in a long 10 pitch at bat.  Unfortunately, Firelands’ next hitter broke the 2-2 tie with a base hit up the middle that scored two runs.

And then the wheels fell off the wagon.  A passed ball and a wild pitch brought another run in.  An error on a ground ball that should have ended the inning allowed another run in.  By now it was 6-2.  Finally Robinson took advantage of a botched double steal by Firelands to end the inning.

Robinson settled down and gave LW a chance to get back in the game with a quick fourth inning.  In the top of the fifth West had an opportunity, but failed to capitalize.  After a leadoff strikeout, freshman John Smolik got a base hit to right.  Junior Josh Cales followed with his second hit of the game, and sophomore Owen Albers got hit by the pitch to load the bases.  After a strikeout for the second out, sophomore Matt Brosky was walked to bring LW’s third run of the game.  But junior Rory Zakareckis got called out on strikes, and the threat was ended.  Offensively, West never got anything else going for the rest of the game.

Cales finished the game on the mound for the Longhorns, allowing two earned runs (three total) in his inning and two-thirds of work.
