ROCKY RIVER --  After losing their last five games to constant rain and three inches of snow over the weekend, Lutheran West looked like a team that hadn’t played in a week.  And while this was true, it didn’t make the loss to Clearview any easier to take.  West continued to struggle to hit with runners in scoring position and take advantage of mistakes by their opponents—as they have all season—but added to that a few mistakes of their own.  The combination was a loss at home in a key early season conference game.

Clearview represents—figuratively, if not in reality—the first real conference test for the up-and-coming Longhorn group.  The Longhorns struggled to pass that test and dropped the game 8-5.  West was a combined 4 for 19 with runners in scoring position, stranding 13 runners on base in the game.  West also committed four errors in the game—easily their worst effort of the year.

Down 3-0, West plated a run in the third on a double off the bat of junior Scottie Berghaus.  The Longhorns then took the lead with a three run fourth inning.  With no one out and sophomore Jeremy Geye on third and freshman John Smolik on first, West executed a perfect double steal, sending Smolik to second and having Geye steal home on the throw. West did it again after sophomore Owen Albers singled Smolik to third and then purposely got in a run down so that Smolik could scamper home from third.   Albers would score the third run of the inning on a two-out RBI single from sophomore Matt Brosky

But that was the end of the goodness for LW.  In the fifth, Clearview put up three more runs on Lutheran West junior starting pitcher Alex Robinson (L, 1-1), when a tailor-made double-play ball that should have ended the inning resulted in no outs.  Clearview ended up scoring three unearned runs in the inning.  West then responded by loading the bases with no outs and failing to score in the bottom of the fifth.
