ROCKY RIVER --  West pushed their winning streak to three games with a win over the Rocky River Pirates on Monday.  Behind strong pitching from freshman Owen Albers and timely hitting, West took the lead early and hung on late in the pouring rain to win, knocking off the Pirates who made the long bus ride down W210, two miles to LW.

Albers, who was on a strict pitch count—owing to the subsequent Sectional Tournament games later this week—did the most with his pitches, working four solid innings and throwing only 52 pitches.  Albers was charged with two runs—both unearned, walked one, and struck out one.  Both runs charged to Albers scored on a two-out dropped fly ball in the fourth.

LW jumped on River early, with the first four batters of the game scoring.  Sophomore Josh Cales started the game with a single.  Albers bunted down the third base line for a hit.  Senior Nick Gambetta singled Cales home with a bloop single to right.  Junior Tommy Walker walked, and then, after a pair of Longhorn outs, senior Sam Jakabcic and freshman Matt Brosky picked up RBIs—Jakabcic on a bases-loaded walk and Brosky on a hard ground ball off the glove of Rocky River shortstop in the hole between short and third.

West scored their fifth run in the second thanks to spectacular base running by Albers.  After Cales flew out to left for the first out, Albers singled to left.  On a 1-0 pitch to Gambetta, Albers took off to steal second.  Gambetta, however, hit the pitch on the ground to the third baseman who threw over to first to retire Gambetta.  Albers, however, accelerated around second and continued to third easily beating the throw from Rocky River’s first baseman.  The throw was not only late, it was also wild, and Albers walked home when it skipped past the third baseman and out of play.

Brosky continued to hit in the clutch when he gathered his third two-out RBI of the day when he singled in sophomore Alex Robinson with two outs in the third.

The game ended after the sixth inning due to a torrential down pour in the top of the seventh.
