Almost everything was perfect this afternoon when Lutheran West hosted Wellington in their first conference game of the year.  Junior Tommy Walker was outstanding on the mound and West played flawless defense, but it wasn't enough as LW fell to the visiting Dukes 1-0.  Walker threw six innings, giving up only one run on six hits, striking out eight and walking two but got tagged with the loss, falling to 0-1 on the young season.

On one of the first truly pleasant spring days of the year, the Dukes scored their only one run in the fourth inning.  Wellington catcher Sam Echstenkemper led off with a base hit, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a one-out single.  In only one other inning did Wellington have two base runners.

Offensively, West had its chances.  In the third inning, senior Nick Gambetta led off with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Rory Zakareckis, but was stranded there when both freshman Owen Albers and sophomore Michael Felten popped up on the infield.  In the fourth, sophomore Josh Cales hammered a two-out single to center and sophomore Scott Berghaus walked, but they were stranded when Gambetta flew out to left to end the threat.

In the fifth, Zakareckis singled to open the inning and moved to second when Albers laid down a bunt that was misplayed by Wellington, putting runners on first and second.  After senior Sam Jakabcic hit into a fielder's choice—leaving Zakareckis on third and Jakabcic on first with one out—Felten again popped out, this time into a double play as Jakabcic was stealing on the pitch and was unable to get back to first.

In the seventh, West had a final opportunity when Gambetta ripped a one-out double to left, but was stranded there when Albers struck out and Jakabcic hit a soft check swing line drive to the third baseman to end the game.

Sophomore Alex Robinson made his season debut pitching a scoreless seventh inning.  Robinson had been sidelined with back problems all spring.

Gambetta once again was LW's top hitter, collecting two of the LW's four hits on the day.‚Äč
