ELYRIA CATHOLIC --  The Longhorns’ season ended when their seventh inning rally fell short and the Elyria Catholic Panthers outlasted them to pull out a 7-4 win.

Lutheran West found themselves in the top of the seventh, down by five runs. Their first three batters, freshman Josh Cales, senior Eric Szczepinski, and sophomore Tim Gettinger, faced a new pitcher and found themselves on base by three consecutive walks. Cales and Szczepinski found themselves scoring during senior Collin McCartney’s at-bat through a pair of wild pitches. With Gettinger on third, the Panthers brought in a new pitcher and McCartney struck out for the first out of the inning. Senior Derek Naim was up next and found himself on base after being hit by a pitch. Senior Aaron Geye accumulated the second out of the inning with another strike out.

At this point in time, the Longhorns were still in the game. They loaded the bases once more after sophomore Tommy Walker took a walk. However, their chances at victory were stopped when junior Nick Gambetta came in to pinch-hit and struck out for the final out of the game and the season.

The game was truly a story of missed opportunities. The Longhorns left their bases loaded twice throughout the duration of the game and were unable to take hold of shortcomings by the Panthers. Additionally, the team suffered from some unforced errors, such as being picked off, and ultimately fell short as a result.

From the play of the first inning, it appeared as if the game might even fall to the Longhorns. They jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and had a good showing at the plate. Their defense also was on display in the inning and they easily retired the Panthers. The tides changed in the bottom of the second when the Panthers took starting pitcher senior Greg Kunze for five runs off of three hits.

Coach Trey Lamb commented on the game, “We jumped out, but unfortunately we left the bases loaded twice and couldn’t push the runs across. It’s kind of the way we’ve been playing all year. We play six really good innings and then that one inning kills us.”
