ROCKY RIVER --  The ugliness of the game did not fit with the beauty of the weather.

West opened their 2014 campaign with a dud, falling to an experienced Elyria Catholic team in a mercy-rule shortened five-inning game 12-0.  West did little right in the game, struggling with routine plays in the field and putting the bat on the ball.  West gave Elyria Catholic nine unearned runs, thanks to key errors in the third and fourth innings to blow the game open.

Honestly, senior starting pitcher Aaron Geye didn’t pitch that poorly.  He coasted through the first two innings before running into trouble in the third.  A leadoff double turned into a big inning when Geye mishandled a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third.  Senior first baseman Eric Szczepinski then threw home on a routine ground ball to first.  Szczepinski failed to touch first before he threw home, so West was looking at two on and no outs with a run in.  After a pop up to sophomore Tim Gettinger at short, Geye gave up a ground ball up the middle that was misplayed into a double, scoring EC’s second run.  A sac fly and a double produced two more runs before the inning was over.

The fourth inning was even uglier.  After Geye gave up a leadoff walk and a routine fly ball to freshman Josh Cales, he was relieved by freshman Alex Robinson.  Robinson also was a victim of poor defense.  After a single and a fly ball resulting in the second out, Robinson walked the next two batters to load the bases.  Then the wheels fell of the proverbial wagon.  Robinson coaxed a ground ball to short that was played into an infield single and a routine pop up to short that landed harmlessly, untouched on the turf at deep short.  Suddenly LW was down 9-0.

It took Robinson four more batters (a walk, two hits, and then a ground out) to finish the inning; eight runs (two earned) on four hits.

Offensively, Lutheran West did practically nothing.  Junior Sam Jakabcic provided the only moment of offensive interest when he singled to start the game, stole second, and moved to third on a ground out.   Unfortunately he was stranded there when Gettinger struck out looking to end the inning.

West failed to get a runner to third base for the rest of the game.  Senior Collin McCartney had LW’s only other hit.
