KEYSTONE --  The Keystone Wildcats pulled out a 10 run mercy-rule against the Lutheran West Longhorns when the Wildcats scored seven runs in the fifth inning off of senior reliever CJ Griffin.
Coming into the fifth, the Longhorns trailed 3-2. The Wildcats immediately came to life and started with both batters getting on base. At that point in the game, starter junior Aaron Geye was taken out of the game.  Griffin struggled immediately, walking three and giving up a pair of singles in the first five batters he faced.  After he got two outs, Keystone finished the game with a walk, a bases loaded double, and an RBI single to boost the lead to ten and fulfill the mercy-rule requirement of a ten run lead after five innings.
Geye left the game having allowed Keystone four earned runs off of a home run, an RBI single, and an RBI double. Geye was tagged with the loss and falls to 0-1.
LW’s offense was able to score their two runs in the fourth inning with an RBI double by junior Derek Naim and a suicide squeeze by Geye. However, the Longhorns were otherwise blanked by Keystone pitcher Marcus Gunter, who gave up only three hits while striking out 12.
West put up a good fight against a good team, but the late game surge by the Wildcats proved too much for the Longhorns. They struggled to both stop their opponents and ignite their own offense, letting Keystone score in bunches, leading to an early finish in a tough game.
Lutheran West’s season is just beginning and they will look to improve upon their 1-3 record with a home conference game versus Firelands.
