Lutheran West got a huge win last night, knocking off rival Fairview under the lights at Bohlken Park. The game, starting at 7:00pm, much later than the usual 4:30pm, was dominated by the Longhorns. Sophomore Aaron Geye (W, 3-1). He showed why he is considered by many the Longhorn ace, shutting down the Fairview offense to the tune of three hits and one run in his complete-game, seven inning effort. Geye struck out seven and walked five.

Offensively, LW put the pressure on Fairview starter David Lansu (L, 3-5) early and often, scoring runs in the third, fourth and seventh, but having multiple men on base in every inning but two. In contrast, Geye rarely had to work out of jams, only allowing two men on base in three of the seven innings.

LW led 3-0 after the fourth, thanks to a sac fly from junior Eric Lewis in the third and hits from senior Andrew Samoson, junior Tyler Cerny, and an RBI double from sophomore Eric Szczepinski in the fourth.   The big runs that put the game away, however, came in the top of the seventh when Samoson singled home Lewis who had singled earlier, and Samoson and senior Tony Haberkorn trotted home on a two run single by Cerny. That put LW up 6-1.

Things got tense for a brief moment when, after striking out the first two hitters in the seventh, Geye, attempting to finish his complete game masterpiece, hit two batters on back to back pitches. It was irrelevant, however, when Geye coaxed a fly ball off the bat of Fairview’s third hitter in the lineup, Tyler Cain, to end the game.
