BUCKEYE --  While LW did lose yesterday, the team played a much better game than they have in the past few weeks. Not only were they not mercy-ruled against a perennially strong offensive team, they even had a lead in the late innings. Sure they didn’t hold the lead, but after losing by double digits in every game of their four game losing streak, playing seven innings in a close game just felt good.

The game was scheduled to be played at Lutheran West, but because West’s field was underwater, it was the Longhorns that took the long bus ride down Route 252 to Buckeye. With thanks to the wind gusting straight out to left, junior Jake Dersi was quickly victim to four extra base hits in the first four batters of the game. After all four scored, Dersi calmed down and pitched five strong innings before leaving with the lead.

LW got back into the game thanks to a five run third. Dersi scored on a single from senior Brandon McCartney. Senior Nolan Grenig and junior Ricky Downer scored when freshman Alex Kebbel drilled a double over Buckeye’s centerfielder’s head. McCartney and Kebbel scored on a dropped infield popup off the bat of junior Andrew Samoson.

After LW took the lead in the sixth on another two out RBI single from McCartney, LW gave it right back in the bottom of the inning. The key play occurred with one out and a runner on third. With sophomore shortstop CJ Griffin out for the year with a concussion, LW was forced to play several players out of position. One of those players was Grenig, stationed in centerfield. Buckeye’s second hitter hit a line drive to Grenig. Grenig, who had his best game of the year at the plate—two for two with a double and two runs scored—broke in on the ball, then tried to jump to catch the ball. The ball caromed off his glove and rolled all the way to the wall. With the game now tied and a runner on second that shouldn’t have been, senior pitcher Will Wagner couldn’t find the plate, walking the next two batters before coaxing a pop-up to left for what should have been the last out of the inning. Because of the error, however, it was out number two, and Wagner then proceeded to throw a wild pitch and give up another single to give up the two runs that decided the game.
