COLUMBIA --  Walks kill.  Nothing was illustrated more evidently last night when Lutheran West travelled out to Columbia for their first real test of the year.  In the game, the Longhorn staff walked five and all five scored.  Columbia’s pitchers walked six and four scored.  Unfortunately Columbia sprinkled in 12 hits to go with the 7 free passes that LW passed out—5 walks and 2 batters hit by the pitch—and LW was down 16-0 after three innings.

LW posted five meaningless runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make the final score seem a little more respectable, but for all intents and purposes, the game was over after three innings.

For the first time this year, LW’s biggest weakness was exposed—a lack in pitching depth.  In their first three games, LW was able to ride quality starting pitching deep into the game, allowing their young offense to take its time to score runs.  That luxury was lost yesterday when junior starting pitcher Jake Dersi was knocked out after just two innings.

Tonight LW hosts Clearview in their home opener.

Freshman Alex Kebbel continued to impress as he went two for two with an RBI double in the fourth.  Junior Andrew Samoson had his first two hit game of the year and drove in two with a bases loaded double in the fifth.
