FAIRVIEW --  Freshman Greg Kunze was impressive last night, allowing only two runs in five innings of work in the frigid spring air as Lutheran West topped rival Fairview in a game played on the JV Field at Bohlken Park.  After having seven of their first nine games cancelled due to wet and sometimes wintry weather, it would have been easy to expect Coach Trey Lamb’s club to just be happy to be on a dry field playing a game.  With their game against Gilmour scratched early in the day, LW athletic director Joel Gesch hit the phones to try to find any game that he could.  Gesch found Fairview—who ironically had a playable field and no opponent.  So instead of taking the long bus ride to Gilmour, LW found itself walking next door to Bohlken Park and playing on the JV field.

The venue was apparently irrelevant to Kunze, who struck out six and walked only two on route to a 79 pitch, 5-inning, 2-run performance. Kunze only had one jam in his five innings.  In the second, he pitched around a bases-loaded no one out jam allowing only one run on a ground out.

In reality the game boiled down to one batter in the bottom of the sixth.  Down 3-2 with two out, Fairview had runners on second and third. Longhorn senior Will Wagner was on the mound looking to close out the game.  Wagner coaxed a high pop-up to sophomore Kyle DiCapua to end the threat.

The Longhorns scored their first run in the fourth when junior Jake Dersi knocked in freshman Alex Kebbel from second with a two-out single to left.  Their second run came in dramatic fashion when—down 2-1 at the time in the fifth—junior Ricky Downer stole home on a delayed steal to tie the game.

The winning run came on a two-out RBI single from senior Brandon McCartney scoring freshman Aaron Geye from third in the sixth.
