ROCKY RIVER --  Losing in the district finals is a bitter pill.  Losing by one run in extra innings after you had a lead makes it harder to take.  Doing it back to back years makes it jagged.

Lutheran West played an exceptional game in the district final earlier tonight, but came up short falling to Waterloo 6-5 in eight innings.  The Longhorn hurlers pitched around jams all day, stranding runners in scoring position in every inning except two.  Offensively, LW got big hits from top to bottom in the lineup. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, as they couldn’t close the deal in the bottom of the eighth.

After senior Ryan Jones opened the top of the eighth with a leadoff double and moved to third on a one-out sacrifice bunt from senior Sam Myers, senior Ty Hoy got the biggest hit of his career with a single to center to score Jones and break the 4-4 tie.  LW only needed three outs to close the game and punch their ticket to Massillon for Regionals next week.

Senior Justin Chislow, pitching in his seventh inning in two days, started the inning by walking the first hitter of the inning.  That wasn’t the real problem though.  The real problem was when the next hitter, the ninth hitter in the Waterloo lineup, laid down a perfect bunt for a single, putting runners on first and second.  There wasn’t really any way that anyone could have made a play; the bunt was really just that good.  Chislow’s next pitched brushed Waterloo’s hitter and suddenly the bases were loaded with no one out, tying run on third, winning run on second.

Chislow wasn’t about to give in.  After starting the Waterloo hitter with a first pitch strike, he seduced a double play ground ball back to him on the second pitch.  Chislow fielded it cleanly and threw home to get the lead runner.  Catcher Billy Valletto, in his haste to turn the double play, dropped the throw and everyone was safe.

The next pitch was singled into center to end the game.

Lost in the chaos of frustration of a second straight district final loss were great games from senior Mike Holick—four for five with two runs scored—and senior Cal Thomay—two for four with a double and two RBIs.

Sophomore Anders Mahon pitched around an almost disastrous first inning, allowing only three runs—two earned—in four innings of work.

The Longhorns gave up an unearned run in the first and then another in the sixth.  The run in the sixth tied the game at four.
