ROCKY RIVER --  It was only a matter of time. Lutheran West’s offense—held in check for the first portion of the game—exploded for five runs in the last two innings giving them their first come from behind victory of the year. The offense gave them a four run lead going into the top of the seventh—all of which they would need to hand the Bison of Beachwood their first loss of the year. Beachwood, who entered the game with an unblemished record of 2-0, kept senior starting pitcher Rodney Bassett in trouble early and often, scoring a run in the first and second innings before tying the game at four with two runs in the fourth. They then knocked Bassett out in the fifth with a run to take the lead 5-4.

LW’s offense wouldn’t be denied, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead, then scored three more times in the sixth to up their lead to four.

LW coach Dave Sellke handed the ball to senior Justin Chislow in the top of the sixth with a one run lead to finish the game. Chislow had no trouble in the sixth with a one run lead, but got touched for three runs in the seventh. Fortunately by that time LW’s lead was four and the Longhorns escaped with a one run victory for their second straight win.

The seventh started innocently enough. Chislow wiffed the first batter on four pitches. The second batter hit a ground ball right down the first base line that hit first base and bounced over first baseman Billy Valletto’s head for a base hit. After a hit batsman, the fourth Bison batter of the inning dinked a bloop single into right to load the bases. Then came the first solid hit of the inning, netting two Beachwood runs and cutting the lead to 9 to 7. After a swinging bunt brought the score to 9 to 8 at out number two, Chislow gritted his teeth and struck out the final batter of the game to end it.

“It wasn’t until the two run single that I got worried,” said Chislow after the game. “It was like, ‘What else could happen?’”

Chislow took matters into his own hands and made sure that nothing weird could happen, coaxing a four foot ground ball and a strikeout to end the game.
