ROCKY RIVER --  On a bitterly cold day, Fairview did everything that they could do to give Lutheran West the victory in last night’s game.  Lutheran West took advantage of everything Fairview offered, and then, as if to be good sports, gave a little back—just to keep the Warriors in the game.  In the end it didn’t matter as LW won handily 13-6.

The game started with a run in the top of the first for Fairview.  It could have been more except that senior starting pitcher Cal Thomay (W, 2-1) picked off a Fairview runner at third to end the inning.

Immediately, LW jumped all over Fairview in the bottom half of the inning.  Senior Mike Holick tripled, senior Justin Chislow was hit by the pitch, and Thomay ripped an RBI double.  After two pop ups, a hit batsman, and a walk with the bases loaded, junior Brandon McCartney hit an infield single to net LW’s third run.

The second inning was a repeat of the first.  Two walks, a second RBI double by Thomay, a dropped popup, a single from senior Billy Valletto, and a double from Mitch Zaharewicz led to four more runs.  Now LW was up 7-1.

Ditto the third.  Senior Ty Hoy struck out but reached on a wild pitch.  A walk, a double steal, and a RBI ground out from Thomay netted another run.  8-1.

Three of the eight runs were unearned.  Fairview allowed eight runners to reach first without a hit on errors (1), walks (4), wild pitches (1), or hit by pitches (2).  Four of those runners scored.

Not to be outdone, LW gave five runs back in the fourth.  With Thomay still on the mound, Fairview managed to get two runners on with a pair of singles.  Thomay coaxed a popup to second base for what should have been the third out.  It was dropped.  8-2. The next batter promptly drilled a 2-2 fastball over the fence in right for a three run homer.  8-5. A single, a wild pitch, and another single made the score 8-6.

Apparently Fairview felt guilty about the charity that they received, so they gave LW four runs right back in the fifth.  A one out walk to senior Sam Myers was followed by a walk to Holick and then Chislow’s second hit by pitch of the game to load the bases.  Thomay’s pop-up to short was dropped, allowing freshman CJ Griffin (who had pinch run for Myers) to score from third.  9-6.  Thomay was called out due to the infield fly rule.  Senior Zach Hausmann was then walked to reload the bases.  Senior Ryan Jones’ ground ball to short should have been the third out, but it was muffed.  10-6.  Valletto’s pop fly to short also should have been the third out, but it was dropped.  12-6.  Finally, Zaharewicz’s pop up was caught and the inning over.

Lutheran West tacked on another run in the sixth—this time earned—and with the aide of two hits—one from Hoy, and the other from Thomay.

There is a point where grace must end.  That point last night was sophomore Anders Mahon who mercifully shut down Fairview in the last three innings of the game.

Altogether Fairview issued 15 free passes.  Nine of those scored.
