Rachel Fenske Haughwout

Class of 2004
I’ll never forget the seriousness of the nursing professor’s words as she looked across the lunch table at me. I was in the final semester of my senior year at Lutheran West and I was visiting a four-year college to check out its nursing program. “We really discourage our nursing students from having a social life or being involved in any extra-curriculars,” she stated crisply. “The program is simply too rigorous and many don’t make it.”  You can imagine my pleasure when, four years later, I graduated from this very school Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing, while concurrently competing in cross country, volunteering for Young Life and interning at a local church.

While it took a lot of hard work, an undisputed factor in my college success was the foundation that Lutheran West gave me. After my very first semester of college, half of my nursing class had changed their majors due to the rigors of Anatomy and Physiology. I had already learned half the material in high school through Mrs. Miller’s A.P. (Advanced Placement) Biology class.

I could go on and on about how Lutheran West prepared me in so many different facets for college. I could tell you how LW’s band expected more than our college band program. I could tell you how four years of running cross country for Mr. Fenske, my father, readied me for even the toughest college workouts. Or I could tell you about the challenge of the A.P. Calculus class with Miss Shimek. There were truly so very many aspects to Lutheran West which helped to shape me into someone academically, emotionally, and spiritually ready for the next four years and even beyond that as I started my first nursing job at a hospital. But I’ll stop here because I know that an education at Lutheran West can be a springboard to things truly great.

I have really come to appreciate ... the manner in which the faculty challenged me both academically and spiritually, encouraged me to be a leader, follow my dreams, and always do my very best.
