Laryssa Hess

Class of 2008
As an alumna of Lutheran West, I can say that I am thankful I chose to attend such a well equipped school. Lutheran West has excellent resources that supplied me with happy memories, a solid education, and a firm faith. These three things gave me a foundation of confidence with which to start out my college years.

Some of my happiest memories belong to the four years I spent as a participant in Lutheran West’s Fine Arts program. I remember being excited to join the theatre department after first seeing a Lutheran West drama production when I was in seventh grade. When I came to Lutheran West as a freshman I remember being eager to audition but without high expectations of landing an acting role for which I had hoped. An advantage to a smaller school, like Lutheran West, is having the opportunity to participate even when roles are limited. The audition process and the show itself turned out to be a great experience as the director and fellow students (including upperclassmen) were friendly and eager to have fun.  This was the first of many great experiences which I would have in the Lutheran West Drama Department.

The band was directed by the talented Mr. John Chamberlain (Mr. C) who instilled a sense of family in the band program at Lutheran West. Mr. C encouraged a learning environment by taking students to Solo and Ensemble Contests every year, and even providing lessons to help students learn a new instrument for either marching band or the jazz band. The Lutheran West choral department offered another creative outlet for students. Mr. Muth provided an environment of encouragement and vocal growth. Mr. Muth worked hard with each individual to help identify his or her talent and vocal part. Choir members were challenged with difficult pieces of music, but under his direction, students grew in their music theory knowledge and vocal abilities.

Lutheran West’s Christ-centered community offers the chance for students to participate and share their talents with a supportive community. I am happy that I was able to find my Laryssa Hess niche in this program. It has provided me with happy memories and lifelong friends.

I have really come to appreciate ... the manner in which the faculty challenged me both academically and spiritually, encouraged me to be a leader, follow my dreams, and always do my very best.
