Watson Qualifies for State in Wrestling

Dave Ressler | Tuesday, March 6, 2018
Congratulations to junior Parker Watson for qualifying to the Division III State Wrestling Tournament at The Ohio State University.  Watson became the 21st state qualifier in the program's 50 year history and the 17th under Head Coach Dave Ressler.  Watson qualified by placing 2nd in a loaded 132lb bracket at the Garfield Hts District Tournament.

Watson's journey to state started way back in 2006 when as a kindergartner he joined the Lutheran West Minihorn wrestling program.  Watson showed great promise right away in the Minihorns but came up short of qualifying for state in grade school.  In Junior High, Watson wrestled for the Lutheran West Shorthorn team and qualified for the state tournament in 8th grade.  In high school Watson was a state alternate last season as a sophomore.

After just missing state last season, Watson refocused and worked extremely hard in the off-season to be ready to make it to the next level.  In the spring he qualified for Ohio's National Team and competed in the Greco-Roman National championships in Fargo, North Dakota in July.  Watson worked hard in the weight room and came into this season at the same weight class but much more experienced, stronger and with better technique.

Watson's run to the state tournament included winning the sectional title by defeating state qualifier Andrew Zarins from Brooklyn in the championship match 5-0.  The win in the sectional championship was Watson's 100th in his high school career.  At districts he defeated state qualifier Nick Cianciola of Canton Central Catholic 15-2 in the quarterfinals and then knocked off returning state qualifier Conner Brennen of Tuslaw 4-2 in the semi-finals.  Watson concluded his district tournament with a loss to returning state placer (5th) and former state champion Niko Chilson of Rootstown.

Watson opens the state tournament on Thursday at 3:00 pm with a first round match against the #4 ranked wrestler in the state, Peyton Lane of National Trail.  It is one of the featured matches of the first round by prognosticator Billy Schaefer.  Watson is ranked 9th in the state by Schaefer.
