Alumni Spotlight-Kathy Kemper Busch

“The sole purpose of Kemper House is to provide outstanding dementia care in a warm home-like atmosphere. The Kemper family wants you to know that the care they give your loved one is the kind of care you yourself would like to give.”

This is a focused approach by which Kathy Kemper Busch lives her life. It also happens to be her career and family’s business. Since 1997 Kemper House has been instrumental in improving dementia/Alzheimer’s care. Kathy’s mother was ahead of her time designing a memory care facility before anyone in the healthcare field confirmed the need for this specialty care. Decades later, Kemper House has two locations, one in Strongsville and the other in Highland Heights. Kathy has been the Nurse Liaison for eight years.

After graduating in 1982 from Lutheran West, Kathy attended Bridgeport University in Connecticut. Her first career was in sales and customer care for her father’s foundry business, Avalon Precision Casting Co. After 20 years in sales, Kathy decided to enroll at Ohio University and received her BSN in nursing. This led her to Lakewood Hospital working in the ICU wing in 2008. It was only natural for Kathy’s career to eventually steer her to Kemper House. Kathy’s scope of work is as the nurse-liaison, completing personal assessments and admissions for potential Kemper House residents. Because the Kempers have personally experienced family members with Alzheimer’s, her scope of understanding is so much greater and allows her to tailor support groups for family and spouses of residents.

Kathy’s diligence in providing the best care is seen through innovative programs and improvements. For instance, after reading The Mind Diet, refinements were made in meal planning. (“The MIND diet aims to reduce dementia and the decline in brain health that often occurs as people get older. It combines aspects of two very popular diets, the Mediterranean diet and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet”.) Along with her brother John (’95) who is the Executive Director, Kathy takes great pride that her family walks beside families that are going through the same journey as the Kempers have experienced. Kathy’s father is now a resident at Kemper House. Kathy says, “Any time I sit with a family, I tell them, this is YOUR story, your family member will get Kemper care. You see for US, ‘it’s personal’.”

Lutheran West holds a warm place in her heart. She remembers the class sign-painting parties and class wars for Homecoming weekends. Even now, high school friendships are sustained. These are the women that Kathy relies on in decision making. West continues to nurture multi generational relationships for her and her girlfriends’ children. Kathy’s son is in the class of 2020. “I love Lutheran West!”,  Kathy beams.
